Make a Cake!

This is a tutorial for a peek-a-boo card using products from the 2012-2013 Idea Book & Catalog.  The ladies who attend my Open House will be making the same style card with a different stamp set.  I’ll be sure to post an image of that one in the next couple of days so you can see the versatility of this technique.

Speaking of my Open House, I hope if you’re local that you’ll stop by.  I’ll be “open” from 11:30AM until 6PM.  I’ll be taking orders and will enter those on the Stampin’ Up website after the event ends.  And, as a reminder, the Stampin’ Up ordering system will be down until Noon (MT.)  No orders may be placed online during that time.  It just gives you a little extra time to get your wish list made.  Smile

My Mom Is Getting Married!

I know this isn’t stamping related, but it’s exciting news.  Those of you who have known me for a while knew that my mom had gotten very serious with an old friend.  Well today (Thursday) is the BIG day.  They are getting married this afternoon & then will be traveling the country for the next 3 months.  What a honeymoon!  I am so happy that she found love and hope that her marriage will bring her joy for many years to come.

Now for the stamping news…..

Today is the very last day to order from the 2011-2012 Idea Book & Catalog!  If there is something you want and it’s retiring, this is the time to buy.

Tomorrow (Friday, June 1st) the new catalog will begin.  Woo Hoo!  Keep in mind that the Stampin’ Up website will be down until about Noon (MT) on Friday for them to update the new catalog items on the site.

I Think I’m Falling For Foam

Foam Ink Pads

I know I spoke about the ink pads a couple of weeks ago, but I have had more time to use them now, and thus more time to get used to them.  I have found that I am getting a consistently good stamped image when using the new foam pad.  Yes, I had to change the way I ink up the stamp and use a tapping motion instead of my usual rubbing, but I’m getting there.  I used the new foam pads on 100 of my convention swaps with a big background stamp and found the image to be perfect with much less work on my part.

I also wanted to mention that everyone of my friends who has been here and sampled the new pad agreed it was superior to the felt version.  No one seems to care that I can’t “rock-n-roll” with the foam ones.  lol  I guess I’m taking back what I said before about not seeing much difference.  I think I’m falling for these new pads.  Granted, I have too much invested in the felt ones to just throw them all out and make the switch.  I do, however, plan to add more of the foam to my collection over time.

Memorial Day Weekend

The purpose of all war is ultimately peace. -Saint Augustine

I just wanted to take a moment to thank the men and women who fight for me and for my country every day and to honor the memory of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.  This is one of the reasons I support Operation Write Home.  I may not be able to do anything to thank those who died for our country, but I can show my appreciation to those still serving.  Making cards for our troops is the least I can do considering all they are doing for me.  You, too, could help our heroes keep in touch with home.  Do you have a bunch of card samples you’ve made and no one to give them to?  Have you been saving cards you’ve made for years and your stash is taking over your craft space?  If so, please consider sending them to Operation Write Home.  They will accept any amount, be it large or small and you don’t even have to include envelopes.  Every card matters, so for more information visit:

Layered Labels

Here’s another sneak peek for you from the new catalog.  This card uses the Layered Labels set, some of the new Comfort Café DSP, and the Apothecary Accents Framelits.

Speaking of the new catalog, if you’re local, you can pick up your copy during my Open House on June 1st.  I’ll be here from 11:30AM until 6PM.  This will also be your opportunity to see some of the new items, do a free Make-n-Take, and buy some retired Stampin’ Up stamps and accessories.  I hope you’ll drop by!

For my out-of-town customers, I have already submitted your shipping information to Stampin’ Up and paid to have the new catalog mailed directly to you.  The company started processing those orders on the 14th, so hopefully you will get your catalog on or just before June 1.

New Craft Room Decor

I know this isn’t really stampin’ related, but I wanted to share the beautiful wreath I received from my friend, Diane.  She painstakingly painted each pinecone and then put them onto the wreath.  I like natural pinecones, but I also like these more colorful versions.  I love how she used different shades of beige, brown, and white and I think it looks great hanging on my beige wall.  I have lots of the scrapbooking storage cubes which are Whisper White in color.  Then I purchased a white bookcase, which ended up looking like Very Vanilla next to the Whisper White.  (Don’t you hate it when whites don’t match?)  This element ties the two areas of my room together and makes the Vanilla bookcase look like it now belongs!  Thanks so much, Diane.  I love it!

Another Sneak Peek…..Well, Not Really

I think tea parties are lots of fun, not only for little girls, but for women too! That was one of the motivations behind me joining a Red Hat group.  There’s nothing quite like putting on my pink hat (I don’t get to wear the red one for a few more years) and getting together to chat over tea.

This really isn’t a sneak peak because you may remember the stamp set, Tea Shoppe, from the Occasions Mini Catalog.  I’m happy to say that the set made it into the new 2012-2013 Idea Book & Catalog.  Here’s one of the cards I made with the set.  I liked adding the little “tea bag” made out of vellum that could be moved in and out of the teacup.

Pretty Doily

Here’s a pretty, but simple idea for using the doily die.  I hesitated to buy it because it takes some work to punch out all the little pieces after it’s been cut, but I’m glad I got it.  I think it makes a beautiful card without spending much time doing other embellishments.

Sneak Peek #2

Here’s a pretty card made with the Forever With You stamp set, Comfort Café designer series paper and fabric, Oval Accents die, and the new Naturals buttons (love these!)  I think this stamp set will be great for using on scrapbooking pages too.

Foam VS Felt Ink Pads

I got one of the new foam style ink pads and tested it against my old felt style for a comparison.  Here’s my personal opinion.

I felt that my image was a little darker with the foam and it was easier to get complete ink coverage with it.  My stamping style will need to change with the foam pads, however.  On my felt pads I rub my stamp across the surface and then tap it.  I found that rubbing rather than just tapping gave me more complete coverage.  You cannot rub on a foam pad.  It’s much too sticky.  I tried just tapping, but I wasn’t getting complete coverage, so then I started doing a twist and then tapping.  It worked and I got lots of ink.  The ink did, however, get onto the edges of the stamp, so I’ll need to be more cautious when using it.  I stamped the same image repeatedly using both the felt pad and then the foam.  The images are show below.  The first generation was a little darker with the foam and then the 2nd and 3rd generation images look very similar.  The only real problem I had was with the “rock-n-roll” technique.  I just couldn’t get it to work with the foam pad.  I think it looks MUCH better with the felt.

I think I’m going to stay with my felt ink pads for now.  First of all, I already own them, so that’s less money I need to spend to keep stamping.  I do think however, that I will get some of the new foam style when I know I’m going to be stamping a solid image.  For example, I know I’m using a big solid image on one of my convention swaps, so I’m ordering the new foam pad in that color to make it easier.

Sneak Peek

Here’s a card made with two of the stamp sets from the new catalog.  This card features Memorable Moments (for the numbers and sentiment) and Papaya Collage for the images, which I particularly love.  This is one of the stamp sets I’ll have on display at my Open House on June 1st.  Be sure to RSVP so I’ll know you’re coming.

Marker Madness

First let me say that I have the BEST customers!  One contacted me recently about the situation with the retiring markers.  Specifically she wanted to know which markers would still be available individually in the new catalog.  Since I didn’t know, I called Stampin’ Up.  I spoke with a really nice representative who told me that she didn’t know.  So, I sent that information along to my customer.  Well, my customer also contacted corporate, and she got an answer!  That said, I now have the answer to the question.

The following markers will still be available individually, in addition to being part of a set.  All other markers will only be sold in sets starting June 1st.

Marina Mist

Thank you, Gretchan, for getting the answer for us!  You really should be a demonstrator.  Smile

Season of Friendship

Of all the stamp sets on the retiring list, I think I am most sad to see the Season of Friendship go.  I used this set often because it was good for so many different types of cards.  I used it for Spring, for Fall, for Father’s Day, for missing you cards.  It was also a great set for new stampers because of it’s simplicity and easy of use.
